We have been fortunate to participate in a few of the DPS conversations on
discipline and suspensions. While we have found them valuable and been impressed
by the diversity of opinion and ideas, it would be great to see more community
members, especially parents and young people as well as those who work with
them, at the final conversation.
On Monday,
December 16, DPS will
host this fourth Community Conversation with parents, youth, non-profit and
faith-based organizations, local businesses, government officials, higher
education, housing communities and employees
to discuss discipline and suspensions with a particular intent to address the
disproportionate impact on African-American males and students with
disabilities.
Final
DPS Community Conversation on Suspension and
Discipline
Monday,
December 16, 6:30-8:00 p.m.,
White Rock Baptist Church, 3400 Fayetteville St.
Spanish
Translation and Child care are available and
there was pizza at the last one. If this is an issue you care about, either up
close or from afar, please make every effort to attend. This is a conversation
that ALL can contribute to. As well, this is an important conversation for the
entire Durham community and school board members and administrators are there
listening closely. We realize this is a busy time of year, but perhaps you can
consider your participation a gift to your community. Please consider making
the time to participate and share your concerns and ideas.
