DACA Information Session in English and Spanish for Latino Immigrant Families--Wednesday, May 27

On Wednesday, May 27th from 6:00pm – 7:30pm there will be an information session at Durham County Cooperative Extension at 721 Foster Street about DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals).  A light Dinner will be provided.  Registration is requested, but not required.

Marty Rosenbluth, a lawyer with the Humanitarian Immigration Law Clinic at the Elon University Law School will be presenting and answering questions about DACA and other questions about immigration options.

Black Girls Code comes to the Triangle--May 27 from 6-8:30pm

Black Girls Code is opening a Triangle chapter. The organization offers programming to teach coding to young women of color (Black, Latina and Native American).  It is a fantastic opportunity.  The opening event appears to be full, but we understand you can contact them directly at the email links on the registration information to see about participating.
Black Girls CODE is a nonprofit organization whose mission has transformed to a global movement to give young girls of color, age 7-17, the tools to become inventors, leaders and creators of their own future in the world’s technology economy. To date they have educated and introduced computer programming to over 3,000 girls of color.

The opening event is May 27 in the American Underground on 201 West Main St and registration is here. When you click on the registration link you will see more information about the event, including contact information and a video.

Free DPS AP Boot Camp--for any student planning to take AP courses next year

If your student is preparing to take an AP course next year, or interested in seeing what is required to be successful in AP, then sign up for DPS FREE AP boot camp. More information follows below. 
•Who: All DPS students in grades 9-12 enrolled in an AP class for 2015-2016
•What: A FREE opportunity to prepare for upcoming AP classes! (There is NO cost to the student, and lunch is provided.)
•When: Monday, July 20th to Thursday, July 23rd from 8:30am-3:30pm
•Where: Durham School of the Arts (400 North Duke Street, Durham NC, 27701Transportation is not provided)

PFAST/LPFAST May Facilitator Training--New Date, May 13th

You may be familiar with Parent & Family Advocacy and Support Training (PFAST) and Latino PFAST (LPFAST) in Spanish—two popular parent trainings we provide through Durham County Cooperative Extension to help parents better navigate their public schools to help their child succeed.  This May we are offering an additional free facilitator training to community members interested in becoming a trained PFAST and/or LPFAST facilitator—facilitators will receive a certification for their participation along with a training notebook and a meal.

Credit by Demonstrated Mastery Information Session--May 6 OR May 12--for Parents and High School Students

Credit by Demonstrated Mastery Information Session

The DPS Advanced Academics Department will offer three information sessions for students and their parents to learn about the Credit by Demonstrated Mastery process.  Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (CDM) is a process for earning credit for a high school course by demonstrating a deep understanding of the content without course enrollment or seat time.
Informational Sessions will be held at the Staff Development Center at the following times:
                Wednesday, May 6,   5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
                Tuesday, May 12,  12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
